ABOUT THIS SITE
Who are you people?
Generally, we’re Browncoats, a global community that shares a passion for the TV series Firefly, and more recently, the major motion picture Serenity. Specifically, the site creators are an international group of Browncoats who met and became friends through the fandom. One of us came up with the idea for this site, and the rest of us just fell all over it like puppies.
What is a “Browncoat”?
In the Firefly series, the Browncoats were the losing side in a civil war between the central planet government (the Alliance) and the outer planet colonies (the Independents, aka Browncoats). Firefly’s Malcolm Reynolds and Zoe Washburne fought on the Independent side in that fictional war, so Firefly/Serenity fans dubbed themselves Browncoats.
Why did you build this site?
Our goal is to give every Firefly/Serenity fan in the world a chance to personally say thank you to Universal. Also, within the fandom, we interact so much online with words, this is an opportunity to actually see each other.
Why not just write a letter to Universal?
This site is more fun than writing a letter. We’re all about the fun.
Will Universal even see this site?
We hope so. But even if Universal doesn’t see it, we still have what this site represents: an opportunity for all Browncoats to stand up and be counted.
Who is this Joss Whedon guy anyway?
Joss Whedon is the creator of Firefly, Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Most Joss Whedon fans would be hard-pressed to choose which they enjoyed more: the creator or his creations. We’re just thankful that you can’t have one without the other. Known for his dry, tilted and self-deprecating sense of humour, Joss inspires a loyalty from his fans because of the complexity of his creations, and because he genuinely seems to like us back.
Do you support all browsers?
When we made this site, we decided to go for full XHTML 1.1 compliance. Which means it works flawlessly on any browser later than, say, the one you’ve been using since the 14th century. :) We’ve successfully tested it on the latest (non-beta) versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla (Firefox), Netscape, Opera, and Safari. Though in the eyes of yours truly, the webmaster, the shiniest view is experienced using IE 6.
What are those three switches for?
Well, actually, it’s four of them, and we call it our Primary Navigation Panel. It’s displayed underneath the "Big Damn Thank You" Logo, and is visible in the Gallery and Waves pages and such. It consists of four arrows, the outer two of which will bring you to the Next and Previous day, and the middle two of which will display Next of Previous entries for the selected day.
SUBMISSIONS
Why is this the very first entry?
Because, while we welcome your photos and waves, we wish to make one thing abundantly clear up front: this site exists for the sole purpose of thanking Universal for making the BDM. Don’t ask for a sequel. Not directly, not indirectly. Might not wanna mistake it for a suggestion. :)
What should be in my picture?
1. You. 2. A sign that communicates thank you to Universal.
Can I submit a group photo?
Of course.
Can I take my photo in front of a landmark from where I live?
Awesome idea, go for it.
I don’t want to post a photo of myself. What should I do instead?
Tape the sign to your cat and submit that. Or any other solution that appeals to you.
Can I wear a costume in my photo?
Sure!
I want to take my picture nekkid. Is that cool?
Uhh, no.
What should my sign say?
Thank you to Universal Studios, worded however you wish. Plain, heart-felt sentence, prose, limerick, haiku, iambic pentameter, shadow puppets... your choice. WHAT NOT TO SAY: Make no reference to a desire for a sequel to the BDM. This site is not a forum for that idea. Stay on-topic, folks. Say thank you!
Where is the photo that I uploaded? It doesn’t show up.
Have you waited 48 hours? Not yet? OK. Wait 48 hours, then check if it’s been loaded onto the site (remember, your photo will be shown for the day it was filed, not the day it was approved). If it doesn’t show up after 48 hours, ask yourself, was my shot offensive or off-topic? If the answer is maybe, your shot probably got pulled by a moderator. Compose another shot and upload that one. If your photo still doesn’t show up, and you’ve been both patient and un-offensive, send us a message through our bug reports page and we’ll get back to you.
What is a moderator?
The folks who put this site together preview every photo uploaded, to ensure submissions are in keeping with this site's purpose.
Why would my submission be rejected?
Text that requests/implies that Universal green-light a sequel to the BDM. Also images or text that are offensive or mean-spirited.
I posted a Wave, but it disappeared. What happened?
Maybe you disregarded the first submission rule? We remove requests for sequels. So, if you made one, you were not supposed to do that. Only the exact phrase I used was: "Don’t!" :) We also remove anything we wouldn’t want our littlest Browncoats to read.
